TOWN OF JEWETT FAQs

    

1. Where did the Town of Jewett get its name?

 Jewett was named for Freeborn G. Jewett who was a justice of the Supreme Court. It was formed from the towns of Hunter and Lexington on November 14, 1849.

2. What is the population of Jewett?

According to the 2000 census the population of Jewett is 970. According to an 1880 census the population was 1072: 567 males and 505 females; and Jewett contained 151 farms. Note; Jewett's population today is difficult to determine because of the number of second home residents. There are currently two active farms in Jewett: the Farber farm and the Soule farm.

3. What is the tallest mountain in the town? 

The highest peak in the town is Black Dome at 3991 feet, to its East is Blackhead at 3984 feet, and to the West of Back Dome is Thomas Cole (named after the painter)  at 3945 feet. These mountains are located in the Northeast area of the town.

4. Is there a stream in the Town?

The only named stream (creek) which is wholly in the town is the Eastkill. It starts in the East of the town and flows westward to the Jewett Heights area and then South to where it meets the Schoharie near routes 17 and 23A. A portion of the Schoharie creek runs through the Southern part of the town along route 23A .

5.  Where is the Town of Jewett?

Jewett is located in Greene County in the Northeastern part of the Catskill Mountains. It is an hour South West of Albany, three hours North of NYC, and 25 miles West of the Hudson river. It is essentially located between the ski slopes at Windham and Hunter.

6.  What is the allure of Jewett?

Jewett offers a quiet, peaceful, serene, clean place to live or vacation. It is generally mountainous, heavily wooded, and offers spectacular views.

7.  General information about Jewett:

a. There are two Post Offices: Jewett 12444 and East Jewett 12424.

b. Each end of town has a volunteer fire department

c. The Town is covered by a professional ambulance service

d. Churches: United Methodist, Presbyterian, Ukrainian. There is a Jewish Synagogue in Hunter and Catholic Churches in Windham and Haines Falls

e. There are 10 miles of State roads, 20 miles of county roads and 40 miles of town roads in the town

f. Police protection is from the NYS Police and Greene County Sheriff's Office

g. Hospitals and ER’s: Hudson 35 miles, Kingston 50 miles, Albany 65 miles

h.Cell phone coverage is spotty, excellent in some areas and none in others

i. Generally air conditioning is not necessary

j. Cable and high speed internet are available in some areas

k. Small dish TV is available in all areas


l.Total acreage of the town is 31,232, of which 7,440 acres are owned by the State (as of 1980); unknown what NYC has bought to date
                 
8. Where are the Town offices?

           9. What are the available public schools?

Depending on your location in the Town of Jewett, students go to either Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School or Hunter-Tannersville Central School. 

10. What is the total assessed value of the town? (Parcels)

The total assessed value of the town is $261,094,203 (# of parcels 1,938)

The town issued a total of 11 building permits between 1/07 - 5/07.

13. How many employees does the highway department employ?

The town has four employees in the highway department plus the Highway
Superintendent who is elected.

14. When the roads are slippery how much salt/sand is used per mile?

According to the highway superintendent a ton of salt/sand mixture is used
per mile to make the town roads safe. He also said that the town trucks have to travel a total 140 miles to remove the snow and sand the roads for each storm.

15. Where is the nearest commercial airport and how far away is it?

Albany is the location of the Albany International Airport (ALB) and it is about 65
miles north. Stewart Airport (SWF) is approximately 60 miles south just off the NYS Thruway in Newburgh.

16. What about bus and train service to the town?

Amtrak has a station in Hudson, NY and Trailways has ticket service in
various Mountain top towns but not in Jewett.

17. What municipal services are offered by the town?

There is no water, sewage, streetlights, or refuse pickup provided by the
town. Refuse pickup is available through private businesses or by going to
the Greene County Transfer Stations in Windham and Hunter; water is drilled
for; New York City's Department of Environmental Protection will"advise"you concerning your septic system (both new and old) and there are no streetlights. We do have one traffic control device at the intersection of
Routes 23C and 296; and there is plenty of fresh air and beautiful vistas at
no charge. All the roads in town are well cared for by the various highway
crews.
